Is a Gas Space Heater Actually Cheaper Than Your Furnace?

Short answer: sometimes. The long answer depends on three variables — the efficiency of your furnace, the efficiency of the space heater, and the price you pay per unit of fuel. Most people skip the efficiency part and just compare the appliance costs, which leads to bad decisions.

A modern condensing furnace runs at 92–97% Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE). That means for every dollar of gas you burn, 92 to 97 cents becomes heat in your ducts. An older atmospheric furnace might sit at 78–82% AFUE. Your gas space heater, depending on whether it’s vented or ventless, runs somewhere between 70% and 99% efficient. Ventless units lose almost nothing because all the heat stays in the room, but they also dump moisture and combustion gases into your living space. Vented units push some heat up the flue but keep the air clean.

Here’s the real-world scenario. Say your central furnace is 80% efficient and your vented space heater is 75% efficient. The furnace actually wins on pure fuel-to-heat conversion. But the furnace heats the whole house — 2,000 square feet — while the space heater only heats the 200-square-foot room you’re sitting in. The space heater uses a fraction of the fuel because it conditions a fraction of the space. That’s the entire game.

Consumer Reports came to the same conclusion in their own testing: space heaters save money when you use them to heat one room instead of the whole house, regardless of the fuel type. The savings come from zone heating, not from the appliance being magically more efficient.

The Math: Calculating Your Cost-Per-Hour and Break-Even Point

You can’t make a smart decision without numbers. Here’s how to find your actual cost per hour for a gas space heater.

First, find the heater’s BTU output. It’s stamped on the rating plate. Most residential units fall between 10,000 and 30,000 BTUs per hour. Next, find your gas price per therm on your utility bill. A therm is 100,000 BTUs. In early 2026, the US average is around $1.50 per therm, but you could be paying $1.00 or $2.50 depending on your region and the season.

The formula: (BTU output ÷ 100,000) × gas price per therm ÷ efficiency = cost per hour. Let’s run a real example. A 20,000 BTU vented heater at 75% efficiency, with gas at $1.50 per therm:

20,000 ÷ 100,000 = 0.2 therms per hour. 0.2 × $1.50 = $0.30. Divide by 0.75 efficiency = $0.40 per hour. Run it four hours a night for 30 days, and that’s $48 per month.

Now compare that to your furnace. If your furnace burns 100,000 BTUs per hour at 85% efficiency, it consumes about 1.18 therms per hour. At $1.50 per therm, that’s $1.77 per hour. Run the furnace for the same four hours nightly, and you’re at $212 per month — but you’re heating the whole house, not just one room.

The break-even temperature is the outdoor temperature at which the space heater costs the same as running the furnace for the whole house. Below that point, the furnace’s efficiency advantage and the space heater’s size advantage cancel out. To find yours, compare the cost per square foot heated. If the furnace heats 2,000 square feet at $1.77 per hour, that’s $0.0009 per square foot per hour. The space heater heats 200 square feet at $0.40 per hour, which is $0.002 per square foot per hour. In this example, the space heater is actually more expensive per square foot — but you’re only heating the room you occupy, so the total spend is lower. The break-even point hits when the outdoor temperature drops so low that heat loss through the walls of that one room exceeds what the space heater can supply. At that point, the furnace has to run anyway to keep the pipes from freezing, and the space heater becomes redundant.

You can calculate this yourself using a heat loss calculator online — plug in your room dimensions, insulation R-value, window area, and local design temperature. The number you get is the BTU requirement for that room at the coldest expected temperature. If your space heater’s output is below that, you’ll need the furnace regardless.

Why You Should Heat the Room You’re In, Not the Whole House

Zone heating works because you stop paying to heat empty rooms. The average home has 2,000 square feet, but you probably occupy 200 to 300 square feet during waking hours. Heating the occupied space only cuts your fuel bill by 30–50% in shoulder seasons. The trick is to commit to the strategy. Ventless units also require an oxygen depletion sensor that shuts the unit off if oxygen levels drop. That’s a safety feature, not a convenience.

Vented units lose 15–25% of their heat up the flue, but they remove combustion gases completely. They’re the safer choice for bedrooms and bathrooms. The efficiency gap is real, but it’s small compared to the health and moisture trade-offs. If you’re in a well-sealed modern home, choose vented. If you’re in an older drafty home with good air exchange, ventless can work — but you need a carbon monoxide detector in the same room, without exception.

The Weekly 5-Minute Maintenance Check for Peak Efficiency

A dirty burner or a blocked air intake cuts efficiency and can create carbon monoxide. Five minutes a week prevents both. Here’s the checklist:

  • Turn the heater off and let it cool completely.
  • Inspect the burner ports for dust and debris. Use a soft brush or compressed air to clear any blockage.
  • Check the air intake grille for lint or pet hair. Vacuum it if dirty.
  • Look at the flame color. A healthy gas flame is blue with a small yellow tip. A lazy yellow flame means incomplete combustion — that’s a service call, not a DIY fix.
  • Wipe the reflector or heat exchanger with a dry cloth to remove dust that insulates the heat output.
  • Test the oxygen depletion sensor (on ventless units) by pressing the test button. If it doesn’t respond, replace the unit.
  • Verify the carbon monoxide detector has fresh batteries and reads zero when the heater is off.

That’s seven steps, most taking under a minute each. Skipping this check for a season can drop efficiency by 10–15% as soot builds up on the burner. Soot also smells and can stain walls near the heater.

Safety First: The Non-Negotiables (Clearances, Detectors, and Venting)

Every gas space heater manual lists clearance distances — usually 3 feet from combustible materials. That’s not a suggestion. A towel draped over a heater to dry, or a cardboard box stored too close, is how house fires start. Keep the area clear, and never place the heater on a soft carpet that can block bottom vents.

You need a carbon monoxide detector on every floor of your home, and one within 15 feet of any sleeping area. Test it monthly. If your gas space heater is vented, inspect the vent pipe annually for rust, holes, or disconnected joints. A cracked vent pipe leaks carbon monoxide into the living space, and you won’t smell it.

Ventless units require the room to have a permanent opening to the outside — a window that opens, or a door to another room with outside access. The oxygen depletion sensor shuts the unit off if oxygen falls below 18%, but you don’t want to rely on that. Crack a window an inch when running a ventless unit for more than an hour.

The Verdict: When to Use the Space Heater and When to Crank the Furnace

Use the space heater when the outdoor temperature is above your break-even point and you’re spending most of your time in one or two rooms. That’s typically in the 40°F to 60°F range, depending on your home’s insulation. Below that, heat loss through the walls of that single room gets high enough that the furnace’s whole-house output becomes more efficient per BTU delivered.

Switch to the furnace when the temperature drops below 20°F for more than a day, or when you need consistent warmth across multiple rooms for several hours. Also switch if you have guests, if you’re sick and need stable temperatures, or if the space heater runs for more than 8 hours straight — prolonged operation without a break strains the unit and increases safety risk.

One more consideration: insulation is the lever that shifts your break-even temperature. Adding attic insulation or sealing duct leaks makes the space heater viable at colder temperatures because the room retains heat longer. It’s a bigger upfront cost than any heater, but it pays off every winter.
