What this calculator does

It works out the heater output a room genuinely needs, in both watts and BTU, then tells you which types of heater can actually deliver it.

The formula

Watts = area × 10 × ceiling × insulation × windows × climate

Ten watts per square foot is the baseline for an average insulated room with an 8 ft ceiling in a moderate climate. It is a starting point, not an answer — the multipliers are what make it accurate for your room.

  • Ceiling height — every foot above 8 ft adds roughly 9% more volume to heat
  • Insulation — a drafty garage needs about 35% more; a sealed modern room 20% less
  • Windows — large or single-glazed glass adds up to 20%
  • Climate — a severe winter can add 45%

Converting watts to BTU

BTU/hr = watts × 3.412

Electric heaters are sold in watts and fuel heaters in BTU. Converting is the only way to compare them fairly — a 1,500W heater produces 5,118 BTU/hr.

Why 1,500W keeps appearing

A standard 120V household circuit is rated 15 amps, and safe continuous draw is 80% of that — about 1,440–1,500W. Every plug-in heater is built to that ceiling. Need more and you require a 240V circuit, a hardwired unit, or a fuel-burning heater.

Slightly oversized with a good thermostat beats undersized. It reaches temperature then cycles off; an undersized heater runs flat out and never gets there.

3Which heater types can deliver it

A standard plug-in heater tops out at 1,500W on a normal household circuit. Above that you need a different type.

Common questions
How many watts do I need per square foot?

Ten watts per square foot is the standard rule for an average, insulated room with an 8 ft ceiling in a moderate climate. That is a baseline, not an answer — a poorly insulated garage in a cold climate can need close to double, and a well-sealed modern bedroom noticeably less.

What size heater for a 12x12 room?

A 12×12 room is 144 sq ft, so roughly 1,440 watts under standard conditions — which is why the 1,500W heater is the most common size sold. Raise the ceiling, add poor insulation or a cold climate and you will need more than one plug-in unit can supply.

Why does 1,500W keep coming up as a limit?
