Hydronic Boiler Repair Guide: Fixes & Maintenance Tips

One part that regularly fails is the internal seal inside the circulator pump. The Myth: A Noisy Pump Always Means Replace the Whole Unit

When the Pressure Relief Valve Spits Water – Don’t Blame the Valve

A pressure relief valve that dribbles or pops off can feel like a hardware failure. More often it’s a sign of an overpressurized system or a failed expansion tank. The PRV is designed to open at 30 psi (residential standard). If your system pressure sits at 12-15 psi cold and climbs above 30 when hot, your expansion tank is waterlogged – it has lost its air cushion.

Test this: tap the expansion tank with a metal tool. A full tank sounds solid. An empty one sounds hollow on top and heavy on bottom. The fix is to drain the system, check the tank’s air pressure at the Schrader valve (should match system cold pressure, usually 12-15 psi), and repressurize the tank if needed. If the tank is rusted or has a failed bladder, replace it.

Don’t just replace the PRV. It’s a symptom, not the cause. I’ve seen homeowners replace three PRVs before someone finally checked the expansion tank. That is an expensive way to learn.

Why does my boiler pump make a loud humming noise after startup?

That’s often air trapped in the pump volute. When the system fills with water, small pockets of air get lodged inside the pump housing. The pump sounds like it’s grinding gravel. Solution: locate the air vent or bleed screw on the pump body (usually a small brass or plastic cap). Open it slightly until water dribbles out, then close. Repeat for each zone. Can I use automotive antifreeze in my hydronic system?

No. Automotive antifreeze contains silicates and other additives that can damage pump seals and gaskets over time. Use only propylene glycol boiler antifreeze specifically labeled for hydronic heating. It has corrosion inhibitors safe for copper, brass, and rubber seals. Always mix with distilled water per manufacturer instructions. Too much glycol reduces heat transfer.
