A single flashing red light on a Malaga water heater points to one of three conditions:

  • Open circuit in the upper thermostat or upper heating element
  • Loose wiring at the terminal block or element screws

The most common cause is the high limit switch. That switch sits behind the upper access panel, mounted directly against the tank wall. It senses surface temperature, not water temperature. If the tank gets too hot, the switch trips and cuts power to both elements. The red light flashes to tell you it tripped.

Diagnose Before You Replace Anything

You need a multimeter for this. A cheap analog one works fine, but a digital one with a continuity setting is easier to read. You also need a flathead screwdriver and possibly a 1-1/2 inch socket for the elements.

Step 1: Kill the Power and Check the Reset

Turn off the breaker at the panel. Not the disconnect switch on the unit, the actual breaker. Wait five minutes for the capacitors to drain, though most residential units don’t have capacitors. Then remove the upper access panel and fold back the insulation.
