Clearance Is Not a Suggestion

Can I leave an electric space heater on overnight?

It depends on the heater. Models with a built-in thermostat and timer are safer, but I do not recommend leaving any portable heater unattended while you sleep. If you must, choose an oil-filled radiator — it stays cooler on the surface and cycles on and off. Place it at least 3 feet from the bed, and make sure it has automatic shutoff. Even then, it carries risk.

How do I check if my electrical circuit can handle a space heater?

Look at your breaker panel. A standard circuit is 15 amps, some kitchen or garage circuits are 20 amps. The heater label tells you watts. Divide watts by voltage (120V in the US) to get amps. For 1500W, that is 12.5A. Subtract that from the breaker rating. What is left is what other devices on that circuit can use. If you have a 15A circuit, you only have 2.5A spare — that is one lamp or a phone charger. Also, for continuous loads (more than 3 hours), stay at or below 80% of the breaker rating. So on a 15A circuit, that means 12A max continuous. Many heaters exceed that, so be careful.
