Heat Storm Wave vs. Phoenix: Which Infrared Heater Should You Buy?

Heat Storm sells two similar-looking infrared panels: the Wave and the Phoenix. Both use the same 1000-watt quartz infrared element and produce roughly 5000 BTU of heat. The core difference is physical mounting. The Phoenix mounts flush to a wall and stays there. The Wave includes a fold-out floor stand, so you can place it on the floor or hang it on a wall.

That flexibility sounds minor, but it changes how you use the heater. The Phoenix works best in a fixed location, like a bedroom or office where you want a permanent heat source. The Wave suits renters or anyone who moves the heater seasonally. You can stand it in the living room during the day and wall-mount it in the bedroom at night.

The Phoenix also has a WiFi version with app control. The Wave does not. If smart-home integration matters to you, the Phoenix wins. If you just want a heater that works without an app, the Wave is simpler and cheaper.

One more difference: the Phoenix ships with a wall-mount bracket only. The Wave includes both the bracket and the floor stand. That’s why the Wave costs slightly more. You’re paying for the dual-mode design.

The included remote is small and basic. It has power, mode, and temperature buttons. The receiver on the heater is picky about angle — you need to point the remote directly at the front panel. It works from across a room, but not through walls or around corners.

Heating Performance: Our 100 sq ft Real-World Test

We tested the Wave in a 10×10 foot bedroom with standard 8-foot ceilings. The room had one exterior wall with a single-pane window, which leaks heat. Starting temperature was 58°F. We set the thermostat to 72°F and ran the heater on high (1000 watts) with the fan on.

The warmth radiates directly to objects and people, not just the air. At 66°F, the room felt more comfortable than the number suggests because the wall and furniture were warm.

The heat distribution is uneven. The area directly in front of the heater — about a 6-foot cone — gets noticeably warmer than the corners. If you sit in that cone, you’ll feel cozy. If you sit across the room, you’ll notice the temperature difference. This is normal for infrared panels, but it’s worth knowing before you buy.

Noise Level and Fan Output During Operation

The Wave has a small fan that pushes air across the quartz tube. On high, it measures 42 decibels from 3 feet away. That’s quieter than a refrigerator hum but audible in a silent room. On low, it drops to 35 decibels, which is barely noticeable.

The fan noise is a low rush, not a whine. It won’t bother you during sleep, but it’s not silent like a purely radiant oil-filled radiator. If you need absolute silence, look elsewhere.

The fan output is modest. It moves enough air to distribute heat through a small room, but it won’t push warm air down a hallway. Keep the heater in the room you want to heat.

Clearance requirements from the manual: 6 inches from the top, 12 inches from the front, and 2 inches from the sides. Keep curtains and bedding at least 3 feet away. The surface of the heater reaches about 150°F on high — hot enough to burn skin on contact, so keep it away from kids and pets.

Running Costs: Monthly Electricity Bill Impact

The Wave draws 1000 watts on high and roughly 700 watts on low. At the U.S. average electricity rate of 16 cents per kilowatt-hour, running it on high for 8 hours a day costs:

Run it on low instead, and the monthly cost drops to about $27. The built-in thermostat cycles the heater on and off, so actual usage is lower. In our test, the heater ran about 60% of the time once the room reached temperature, cutting the real monthly cost to roughly $23.

Compare that to a 1500-watt coil heater running the same schedule: 1.5 kW × 8 hours × $0.16 = $1.92 per day, or $57.60 per month. The Wave uses less power because it heats a smaller area more efficiently. It’s not magic — it’s just a lower wattage element.

For a drafty room or a large open-plan space, the Wave won’t keep up. You’ll run it on high constantly, and the cost will climb. This heater suits a single room up to about 150 square feet, not a whole house.

Ease of Use: Thermostat, Remote, and Safety Features

The control panel sits on the front, with four buttons: power, mode, up, and down. The mode button cycles through high, low, and eco. The eco mode uses a built-in thermostat that targets 68°F and cycles the element on and off to hold that temperature.

The thermostat reads the air temperature near the heater, not the room average. That means the heater may shut off while the far side of the room is still cold. You can compensate by setting the thermostat a few degrees higher than your target.

The remote duplicates all the front-panel controls. It’s a basic IR remote, so it needs line of sight. The remote also has a timer function that lets you set the heater to run for 1 to 12 hours, then shut off. That’s handy for bedtime.

Safety features include a tip-over switch, overheat protection, and a cool-touch housing. The front panel stays cool enough to touch, but the top vent gets hot. The overheat protection shuts the unit off if the internal temperature exceeds a safe limit, which can happen if you block the air intake.

Long-Term Reliability: What Owners Say After 6 Months

You should skip the Wave if you need to heat a large open-plan room, a drafty garage, or a space bigger than 200 square feet. The 5000 BTU output won’t cut it. You’ll run it on high constantly, and you’ll be disappointed.

You should also skip it if you want smart-home integration. The Wave has no WiFi, no app, and no voice control. The Phoenix is the better pick there.

For everyone else, the Wave is a solid, well-built heater that does exactly what it claims. It’s not flashy, but it works. The dual-mode design gives you flexibility that most infrared panels lack.
